Over the years, I have worked in a variety of contexts that have seen me involved in the education of young children, teenagers and mature adults. My experience has included teaching Mathematics both in an English Preparatory School and, for many years, in an International Senior School, where I also taught Theory of Knowledge within the IB Diploma programme.  I have run holiday programmes for children, lectured at Oxford University, facilitated workshops for all ages, and been involved in a variety of leadership roles that culminated in a decade as Senior School Principal in a reputed K-12 International School in Switzerland. My experience of international education has been broadened through my involvement as an accreditation visitor for the Council of International Schools (CIS).

I believe strongly in a holistic education that retains its academic challenge, and I enjoy working creatively with schools to ensure their educational programme is well suited to their unique circumstances. I believe also that a school’s ethos, a vibrant community and excellent organization all help provide the best context for education. I encourage teachers, parents and students to understand the collaborative nature of education so that it may become more of a positive and life-shaping experience for the whole school community.

In my blog (www.regardingteenagers.com), I seek to share some of the experience I have gained in a lifetime of working with teenagers, whilst getting to grips with some of the issues involved in raising teenagers and equipping them for life in today’s world. As an experienced public speaker and facilitator, I am keen to offer workshops for teachers and parents to explore further with them the unique opportunities they have as those who care for today’s teenagers.

It is hard to overstate the value of education at any stage of life. Education can free up individual human creativity by offering an expanded vision of what is possible. It can challenge the prejudices and fears that too often bind and restrict communities. It can inspire our human race to rise to the great challenges that need to be addressed and solved if our world is to have a future. For reasons like these, education needs always to be the best; but often it is not. I am always excited to be involved in the education of students, teachers and parents, helping to enhance education and to make it more widely available and accessible.

A school is a microcosm, and as such it is a challenge for each and every school, regardless of enrolment numbers, to provide a creative and collaborative environment in which its community can thrive.

From a very tender age I was fascinated by the variety, quality and effectiveness of my teachers, and the way in which I was taught, and more importantly, how I learned. I thought intently about why a teacher was “liked”. Why did I work better in a specific class rather than another class? My list of thoughts and questions was endless, and has remained so, although my knowledge, experience and engagement have developed over several decades within the teaching profession.

So it was that, when it was time to select a career path, my route was already well established: I would become a teacher and join the most honourable of professions! This was a decision that would change and drive my life. It would lead me on a journey of academic pursuit, and action, as to how best to support colleagues and school communities in their pursuit of excellence. Amongst other conclusions, a simplistic observation was made: the ability, cohesiveness, collaboration and creativity of a school’s leadership team directly impacts the quality of what is achieved in a school. For this reason, I now offer my services to support growth and development in schools throughout the world.

Following academic study at U.K. universities in History and English Literature, and subsequently Education, I eventually studied Business Management at the London School of Economics, whilst pursuing teaching and leadership roles in a variety of educational institutions. These studies supported my eventual role as Head of School and as a Board member of several institutions. My entry into international education, more than 20 years ago, has expanded my experience, knowledge, and commitment to ensure that the education of students in the globalised world of the 21st Century, is of the highest quality. To this end, my educational journey continues.
